It’s time to talk about real economic development in Nebraska

In a column that appeared in multiple Nebraska newspapers this week, OpenSky Executive Director Renee Fry wrote that with the launch of Nebraska’s new brand (Good Life. Great Opportunity), it’s time to start a real discussion about economic development in Nebraska.

Fry writes, “It is time for new conversations about focused policies and targeted investments that will truly build the kind of economy we want and need. It’s also time to move away from the questionable and risky idea that tax cuts – and particularly income tax cuts – are the silver bullet for economic growth.”

Fry notes that it’s important to begin any talk about economic development in Nebraska by recognizing that our economy is strong and growth has been steady. But there also is room for growth, she writes and notes that recommendations discussed at the recent Governor’s Summit on Economic Development by the independent research firm, SRI International, present exciting opportunities for our state.

OpenSky, Fry writes, looks forward to adding to the state’s economic development discussion at our Fall Policy Symposium on Sept. 1 at Nebraska Innovation Campus in Lincoln. The symposium will feature a presentation by renowned economist, Dr. Timothy Bartik, who is an expert on the interaction of public policy and economic development. Read the full column online.
