Omaha World-Herald on Dec. 25: Changes in income, sales and property taxes are all possible as new legislative session looms in Nebraska

There’s no question about Gov. Pete Ricketts’ and Nebraska lawmakers’ desire to provide relief for Nebraska taxpayers next year.

But there’s plenty of uncertainty about what might happen in a year with a roughly $900 million budget shortfall, 17 new state senators and three competing approaches to tax relief.

“I’m just not sure anyone has that answer yet,” said State Sen. Jim Scheer of Norfolk, one of two candidates for legislative speaker.

Heading into the new legislative session, he and others say there is no consensus among lawmakers or lobbying groups about how to achieve tax relief or even which tax to target.
