OpenSky Lincoln briefing part of busy budget day

Thursday, April 30 is shaping up to be a very busy day in regards to the Nebraska budget discussion. On that day, the Legislature is scheduled to begin debate on the Appropriations Committee budget proposal, and the Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board will meet to update revenue projections, upon which the Appropriations Committee budget proposal is based.

Also, that morning OpenSky will host a budget briefing in Lincoln from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The briefing will feature a presentation on Nebraska taxes by OpenSky and a budget discussion with Sen. Heath Mello, chairman of the Legislature’s Appropriations Committee. The briefing will be held at the Nebraska Club in the US Bank Building at 13th and M streets.

OpenSky also will hold a budget briefing in Omaha on Monday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska Omaha Office, Aksarben Room, at 1919 Aksarben Drive. The Omaha event also will feature a presentation by OpenSky and a budget discussion with Sen. Mello. Both briefings are free and open to the public and you can RSVP for them online.

The Appropriations Committee on Tuesday signed off on its $8.7 billion budget proposal for the next two years. The budget proposes below-average spending growth at 3.1 percent per year, boosts state support for education, and invests $60 million per year into the state’s property tax credit program. Sen. Mello did say lawmakers may make adjustments to the budget should there be changes in the forecasting board’s revenue projections.
