OpenSky Profile: Executive Director Renee Fry

When you ask OpenSky Policy Institute’s founding director Renee Fry why she decided to lead a new voice in Nebraska policy, her answer is surprisingly simple. “I felt that good data about budget and tax issues was lacking and saw an opportunity to help improve it,” said Fry. It’s this kind of logic that Renee is using to run OpenSky

After graduating from the University of Nebraska’s College of Law, Fry served as Legal Counsel to Speaker Doug Kristensen and later as Director of Government Relations and Director of Public Relations at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Her experiences on both sides of policy-making cemented Renee’s belief that good policy is built on solid data.

At OpenSky, Fry sees her role, and the role of the Institute, as that of an unbiased voice. “Our job is to look at the policies being discussed and to examine and share their impact with policy makers and the public, all while staying grounded in what the data are telling us.” Fry’s goals are reflected in those of the Institute, which strives to improve economic opportunity for all Nebraskans by clearly providing impartial and precise research.

As for the future, Renee sees OpenSky’s role as a trusted, balanced voice in Nebraska policy-making continuing, aspiring to become the most trusted resource on fiscal policy for the public and policy makers alike.

Renee, a Wisconsin native, is proud to call Nebraska home. She lives in Omaha with her husband and two children and enjoys cooking and reading in her spare time.
