OpenSky’s Renee Fry: Our work is more important than ever

Last week, Sen. John Harms wrote that he believes OpenSky is one of the most important organizations in the state because of the contributions we make to our state’s fiscal debates. I couldn’t agree more.

Last week, the nation also went to the polls and the results of the elections at the national, state and local level – where many races were decided by slim margins – illustrated a divide in our country and in our communities.

The political vitriol that has permeated the discourse before and after the election has reinforced my belief that OpenSky’s work is more important than ever.

Our mission is to improve opportunities for every Nebraskan by providing impartial and precise research, analysis, education and leadership. In the past five years, that mission has allowed us to become a leading voice in our state’s fiscal debate – a voice that is relied on by lawmakers, journalists, community leaders, members of the public and many others.

We have worked with many people throughout our state who are dedicated to improving the lives of Nebraskans. It is an honor to work alongside these Nebraskans – who come from all political backgrounds – to find sound, data-backed solutions to issues like tax and budget policies, school finance and fiscal transparency. It’s been affirming to meet so many incredible Nebraskans who rise above the rhetoric to work toward real solutions regarding important issues that truly affect Nebraskans.

In recognition of OpenSky’s fifth anniversary, our goal is to raise $30,000 by the end of 2016 to help us continue our work to improve opportunities for every Nebraskan. Your support of OpenSky, either through an online donation or by check sent to the address below, will help us continue our mission.
