Omaha World Herald on April 12: Property tax relief in Nebraska may come only in small hits this year
LINCOLN — Those seeking a home run on property tax relief this year from the Nebraska Legislature better be ready to accept some singles and doubles.
Bills seeking comprehensive property tax relief, which had been deemed the top priority of new Gov. Pete Ricketts along with rural senators and farm groups, haven’t advanced so far in the Legislature.
With two-thirds of the 90-day session over, minor adjustments may be coming. But most senators say that a major overhaul will have to wait until next year, after another study of financing public schools, the biggest consumer of property tax dollars.
“Until we determine what changes need to be made with school financing, you can’t have meaningful property tax relief,” said State Sen. Galen Hadley of Kearney, the speaker of the Legislature
