Supporters of strong public schools in Nebraska turned in 117,000 petition signatures on Wednesday in an effort to give voters the final say on LB 753, the measure creating private school scholarship tax credits.

Petition signatures surpassed the qualification threshold in two-thirds of the state’s 20 largest counties and two-thirds of Nebraska’s 20 smallest counties, which led OpenSky Policy Institute Executive Director Dr. Rebecca Firestone to the conclusion that “if you want to get something done, ask a teacher.”

Once signatures are verified, a vote on repealing LB 753 would be scheduled for the November 2024 General Election.
