Hearing Thursday on Nebraska’s business subsidy programs

Department of Revenue officials will present at a joint hearing of the Legislature’s Appropriations and Revenue committees Thursday to give a report on the state’s business subsidy programs.

The annual hearing became a requirement in 2013 and is designed to help the state better monitor its business subsidy programs. That same year, the Legislature’s Performance Audit Committee found the goals for the business subsidies “were too vague to permit useful evaluations of the programs.”

The annual hearing is one of several steps lawmakers have taken in the past few years to improve how the state monitors business subsidies. Most recently, lawmakers passed legislation that requires audits of Nebraska’s business subsidies. The new legislation also changed sunset dates on the programs.

Thursday’s hearing starts at 10 a.m. in the State Capitol, Room 1113 and will be streamed online by NET Nebraska.
