The Grand Island Independent on Nov. 26: GIPS finance director, OpenSky advocate for reviewing past tax cuts

Forecasts say Nebraska faces a $900 million budget shortfall over the next biennium.

After hearing that forecast, Virgil Harden, Grand Island Public Schools finance director, could not resist pointing out that, by some calculations, tax cuts enacted by the state during the past 10 years total more than $700 million for the coming fiscal year. If that amount is doubled, the total is more than $1.4 million, which would be more than enough to cover the projected $900 million shortfall.

Harden doesn’t believe state senators are about to wipe away all the tax cuts that have been enacted over the past decade. Neither does Renee Fry, executive director of the OpenSky Policy Institute.
